The history of our hotel near Novacella/Neustift in South Tyrol

Our historic hotel near Novacella/Neustift in South Tyrol is intrinsically linked to the history of the medieval monastery of Novacella/Neustift 500 metres away. The Alte Moar was first mentioned in documents in the 13th century. At that time most of the land in the surrounding municipality of Varna/Vahrn belonged to spiritual and secular landlords. The lords from Abbazia di Novacella/Neustift monastery were among the largest landowners in the area. These began to lease out their farms before 1300. One of these farms was the "Moar in Bsack" farm, today's three-star superior Zum Alten Moar hotel …

Owned by the Sigmund family for over 500 years

Our hotel near Novacella/Neustift in South Tyrol already existed in 1270. It has been owned by the Sigmund family since 1509 The core of the building in the southern part was erected at the end of the 13th century and extended on the west side in the 14th and 15th centuries. Today’s cellars, the cosy parlour on the upper floor and the wayside shrine next to the building were created at this time. In the 16th century the building was extended on the north side. The oven on the south façade also dates from this period.

In the mid-17th century the north side was developed and the entire building was extended by one storey. Today’s vault inthe kitchen was erected. About a hundred years later, in the 18th century, the farm section was extended once again to the north. The stable on the ground floor and the hay barn above it were built. The next major change to the building followed at the beginning of the 19th century. The room layout was reorganised and the parlour, which is still preserved today, was also re-panelled. In the decades after the Second World War, the family acquired several forests and properties, including the rustic Zirmait Alm, a popular meeting place for locals and guests today.
